LG coach Yeom Gyeong-yeop announced plans to run the season with the idea of a ’40-man entry’ like the 40-man roster in the major leagues.
The plan is to widen the pool of players who can play in the first team (28 players) to 40 and use them evenly in the regular season to play the regular season. It is a plan to consider the physical strength management of players, preparation for variables such as injuries, and even the future after 2 to 3 years at the shortest.
Lee Cheon-woong and Jung Joo-hyun, who had little chance to play in the first team last year, are expected to get a chance this year.
Manager Yeom said, “The best team is a team in which young players play a lot as starting pitchers and old veteran players play as backup starting pitchers for about 70 to 80 games. This is a team with a good future. A team that circulates like that is a good team. The rebuilding will come naturally, and we will become a consistently good team for the next 10 years or more.”
Director Yeom said, “LG is structured like that. Seniors have that role. You must have experience to deal with pinch hitters or critical situations in the late game. In the match and climax, experienced players have a higher chance.”
LG is a team that aims to win the Korean Series right away. It is a composition of players with no weaknesses except for the native starters. There are backups that are as good as the starters along with the solid starters for each position. The bullpen is considered the best in the league. Players who played as main players just two or three years ago are being pushed back to the second team.

Manager Yeom, who took 26 pitchers to the spring camp, said, “The four of us, Kang Hyo-jong, Park Myeong-geun, Baek Seung-hyun, and Yoo Young-chan, can select and focus on a step up. Opportunities will be constantly presented. I think it will be a season to develop into a key player in the first team.” Kang Hyo-jong and Park Myeong-geun are candidates for the 5th starting pitcher, and Baek Seung-hyun and Yoo Young-chan are said to be highly likely to enter the first team as long relief players who can pitch 2 innings.
Manager Yeom said, “When you play a season, you can’t play with 28 players (in the first team entry). It should be done with 40 people. It requires 18 fielders and 22 pitchers. We need to create a system that motivates players other than 28 and does not give up when called by the team.”
But why 40 people? It means that other than 40 people are not ready to fight. To some extent (in the 1st team), you have to be prepared to fight before giving it a chance.
